Product evaluation in clinical trials
Before a product can be placed on the market, it must undergo well-controlled clinical trials to prove that it is safe and effective, and its potential benefit to patients outweighs the possible risks. Clinical trial results and related product information are then submitted to the relevant health authorities for review. Clinical trials result in the generation of evidence that may lead to the approval of a product, which can make it more widely available to patients.

About Us
Benefitting from our continued focus on innovation, Novartis has one of
the industry’s most competitive pipelines with more than 150 projects in
clinical development. Many of these projects, which include new
molecular entities as well as additional indications and different
formulations for marketed products, are for medicines that could
significantly advance treatment standards for patients worldwide. This
table provides an overview of selected projects in development.
We focus on discovering and advancing new treatments for serious patient needs. From the inception of a therapeutic through early clinical development, our disease area teams collaborate across scientific disciplines and organizations in support of our mission to improve and extend peoples’ lives.

Our Research
Researchers have used the standard tools of biology and chemistry to develop many successful treatments, and we’ll continue to use them. However we recognize that these tools leave many drug targets—key proteins and nucleic acids known to play a role in disease—out of reach. We would like to hit these targets to fight diseases, many of which have dodged the conventional molecules in our arsenal. To address this challenge, we are blazing a new path: organizing our early discovery efforts around a scientific discipline called chemical biology.
